The Silverstone MS05 is a 2.5" enclosure which comes with an additional drive bay, to insert the unit into your computer. So you can take advantage of the eSATA interface at home, leaving you with the very portable USB 2.0 connectivity on the road.

Today we focus on the SST-MS05 from Silverstone which is the latest in their external drive enclosure line which includes an internal docking bay (requires a free 3.5inch external bay or a 5.25inch bay adapter).

For this review I will be looking at a product from the highly respected pc hardware manufacturer SilverStone. The product up for review is in fact a hard drive caddy / enclosure, not a typical 3-1/2" caddy this is a sleek caddy for a 2-1/2" drive and as a bonus it comes with a docking station, it is the MS05 from SilverStone. All will be revealed in the review.

The increasing demand for high capacity mobile storage solutions drives consumers towards 2.5" HDDs and external enclosures. A 2.5" HDD requires minimal power to operate, while it can also offer the large storage capacity needed for regular back-ups or large file transfers. Transferring large amounts of data over the USB bus can be a nightmare for many people who need to be on the move quickly. 2.5" drives are considerably larger than flash drives and, in many cases; the enclosures are not sturdy enough to protect the sensitive disk drives. The answer to these problems, according to SilverStone, is the MS05 enclosure. The MS05 is made out of aluminum, comes with a docking bay and offers not only a USB port but an eSATA port as well, which is considerably faster.

The last time we had looked at a SilverStone drive enclosure at Phoronix was in early 2006 when reviewing the SilverStone Storage MS02. This 2.5" IDE hard drive enclosure with a USB 2.0 interface met the SilverStone standards we have come to expect both when it comes to the build quality as well as its looks and performance. With the changing times and increased adoption of Serial ATA, SilverStone recently introduced their MS05, which supports 2.5" SATA drives while this aluminum enclosure has both a eSATA and USB 2.0 interface along with having a 3.5" docking station.
