Thecus recently applied the "make it better" methodology to its five-disk N5200 NAS device. It's taken the original, sped it up, added some features and come up with a cunning name, the N5200 Pro. Question is, has Thecus added the extra "wow"? We've got five letters for you, dear readers: i-S-C-S-I.

Thecus has a reputation for delivering innovative NAS appliances with its RouStor N5200 garnering a well-deserved Recommended award for its extensive range of features and storage potential. With the N1200 Thecus has focused on home users looking for a repository for their multimedia content and its claim to fame is being the first desktop appliance to support both 3.5in. and 2.5in hard disks.

The Thecus N2100 is a small and simple to use network attached storage device that would allow everyone on the home network to access and share data. However, while simple in design, I quickly learned upon receiving it that it was actually very powerful when it came to sharing data. Features such as dual Gigabit LAN, external USB 2.0 ports, optional wireless and Serial ATA hard drive support make this NAS device one to take under serious consideration.

Today we're reviewing a product through which one might enjoy the delights of Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Kate Bush, and if I dare raise the level of class just little bit, Avril Lavigne. In fact, one could even enjoy a bit of Vin Diesel or Jack Bauer with this here product, if you're hard enough.

The last time we took a look at a product from Thecus it was the N2050 RAID enclosure. It proved to be a quality made device and received out Editor's Choice Award. This time we are taking a look at one of Thecus's portable drive enclosures, the Y.E.S. Nano N1050 drive enclosure. This drive enclosure is unlike other drive enclosures out there because it features a copy feature that will automatically copy anything from an attached USB device with the press of a button. So let's take a look.

Just when you thought it wasn't possible to cram any more features into a desktop NAS appliance along comes Thecus and its latest N5200 RouStor. This is the first of its kind to support up to five SATA hard disks and it also brings RAID-6 into the picture. Normally seen on higher end disk arrays, RAID-6 offers dual independent parity and can survive the loss of two hard disks. A great idea but it seems a tad excessive for a desktop storage box as it requires a minimum of four disks to function and it eats up an inordinate amount of raw storage capacity.

The diminutive N2050 from Thecus stands out from the crowd as it augments its pair of USB 2.0 interfaces with an eSATA (external SATA) port making it one of the first to market with this connection option. Even better is the fact that the N2050 is shipped in kit form and comes with a PCI eSATA controller card and one metre cable.

The N2050 could be described most simply as a external SATA device which also has a SATA to USB bridge. It's a little more complex than that, however, as it's also a RAID device. So, inside there are two SATA 3Gbps channels, connected to a storage processor, charged with creating a RAID-0 or RAID-1 array from two attached drives. It is this RAID entity that is then presented via the eSATA or USB interface. Clever, eh?...

The N2100 is a smart networked storage solution for home users wanting to share photo albums, music and general files. The iTunes server features make this particularly versatile although we found Western Digital hard drives the best choice for cool running...

Thecus' YES Box N2100 does a lot of things right. It's robust, despite its plastic exterior; it looks good, but keep your grubby hands off; it's easy to setup, both hardware and software; it's easy to use, with multiple ways of getting at your data; and it's fast enough to serve multiple users simultaneously, but a little more performance wouldn't go amiss...

If you're looking for a new means of storing and protecting the vast amount of data you have somehow managed to acquire, then ask yourself whether an IP storage solution would be feasible for you. If you really need a 100% uptime, network attached storage device with access control and hotswap array rebuilds, and you don't mind the 7 hour RAID 5 build (which is only likely to be an issue once,) then the N4100 is worth considering. Just bear in mind that 900GB of protected network attached storage in a sexy black box will set you back a grand.
