Seasonic power supplies have gotten a bit more stylish over the years, but we don't judge them by the outside. It's the circuitry on the inside that really matters. The Seasonic S12 II 500W power supply PCSTATS is testing today is exactly the same as the S12 model that came before it, except for the addition of a single conductive polymer aluminum solid capacitor on the all important 12V rail. The company hasn't replaced every single electrolytic capacitor in the unit with this type, just the one voltage rail where reliability is likely to matter the most.

This review is a continuation of a recent mini-roundup of a few 700W power supplies. I'll be taking a look at the Seasonic M12-700 power supply to see if it's as good as their reputation suggests.

One of the key features consumers are looking at today when purchasing a power supply is the efficiency of the unit along with the output. The Seasonic S12 Energy + 550 power supply is the one we are looking at today. They also offer the S12 Energy + in a 650 Watt version as well. This "80 Plus" certified unit will be run through the rigorous tests done by our good friend Jonny.

It's not everyday when you need an exotic power supply such as a Tagan TurboJet 1100W power supply; we can trace its roots back to the simple reason that exists behind all this -- the fact that not everyone has a Core 2 Quad, a couple of 8800GTX and an array of hard drives humming in their cases for such a large power requirement. While most people would be more than glad to own a unit for whatever purposes, many of the APH readers asked me to review a quality midrange power supply that's suitable for the masses. So, what aspects are the priorities of power supplies residing in this part of the market? Besides standard requirements such as power, efficiency, and general quality, we would also see if it can achieve objectives such as how silent it is as it is as powerful, as well as for midrange consumers -- the price (Or how it is justified for a reasonable cost). There's maybe a handful of quality power supply manufacturers out there, but the Seasonic M12 500W that's been sitting inside my case for the last few weeks is something to be in the spotlight today.

Gone are the cheapo power supplies of yesteryear. Processors today from both Intel and AMD require a power supply that can deliver a steady diet of power. The Seasonic name has become the standard of barrier in power supply from a distant land, China. We are looking into one of the new M12 Modular series today rated at 600 watts from Seasonic.

The thought behind modular power supplies is that you wouldn't walk out the door wearing every item of clothing you own, so why keep all those unused power cables too?. Seasonic's M12 700W powersupply is just about to hit the retail markets and according to the Seasonic label, the +3.3V line will deliver a maximum of 24Amps while the +5V rail can deliver 30Amps. Total output for the +3.3V and +5V rails is 170W combined. There are four +12V rails on the M12 700W, and each delivers a maximum of 18Amps, with total power output of 672W.

Seasonic's flagship power supply this summer is the S12 Energy Plus SS-650HT 650W model. From what we've seen thus far, this power supply should fit nicely into the same category as PC Power & Cooling. The Seasonic S12 Energy Plus SS-650HT 650W is SLI certified, and that itself should be a sign of what's to come. It is fully ATX 2.0 compatible and has an energy efficiency rating above 80%. According to the Seasonic label, the +3.3V line can deliver a maximum of 24Amps while the +5V rail can deliver 30Amps. Total output for the +3.3V and +5V rails is 170W. There are four +12V rails on the SS-650HT and each can deliver a maximum of 18Amps apiece with total power output of 455W.

Seasonic's flagship power supply is its S12 600 and computer enthusiasts have put this bad boy in the same category as PC Power & Cooling, Fortron Group and Silverstone units, that's some pretty select company! The Seasonic S12 600 is SLI certified, that itself is already like a badge of honor and it is fully ATX 2.0 compatible. The Seasonic S12 600 retails for $171 CDN ($155 US, 83 GBP) but that's a pretty aggressive price for a top of the line PSU...

This little PSU isn't a power beast and it is not meant to be. With only 250-watt it won't be able to pull a 3GHz + Intel Prescott and a high performance VGA card. This isn't the main goal of this PSU. The box states: "Best for upgrading your OEM power supplies" is not an over statement...

The Seasonic S12 500W PSU is a very good looking and powerful PSU. The performance of the Seasonic S12 500W PSU is also very good and stable. The operation noise level was very silent as well. There are four SATA connectors included as well for supporting the SATA hard disk and dual PCI-Express connector to support the SLI technology VGA card. With the price of around $139 US, this was a good buy power supply unit if you are looking for a powerful and nice looking PSU although it was slightly expensive than other normal PSU. Highly Recommended!
