D-Link jumped on the draft-802.11n merry-go-round a few months ago with its RangeBooster N650 router which offers a good range of features but ultimately failed to impress in the wireless performance stakes. The DSL-2740B represents its next stab at the high-speed networking market and adds an integrated ADSL 2/2+ modem and a few extra features to the mix.

We?ve seen a steady demand for diskless NAS appliances that allow users to pick their own hard disks or maybe put an old timer back into action. The latest DSM-G600 from D-Link does just that as it allows you to add a single IDE drive and share it over wired and wireless networks.

The latest fad in the surveillance market is being able to keep an eye on your home and property from a mobile phone or PDA. We?ve seen some proprietary solutions garnering a fair amount of interest and D-Link now steps in with its Securicam DCS-2120 IP camera. Taking over from the DCS-2100G it offers support for wired and wireless network connections and the RTSP (real time streaming protocol).

D-Link delivers a very good range of features for a comparatively low price along with good wireless performance. However, the DSL-G624M is not as easy to configure as Netgear's DG834PN and the latest firmware upgrade is a must for this router...

Camera design is archaic and the engineering isn't great but the above par picture quality and tons of features go some way to make up for this. D-Link really has packed in a wealth of surveillance capabilities into the DCS-5300G and the software bundle complete with recording studio makes this very good value.

Very small businesses looking for a simple, low cost PoE compliant switch will find the DES-1316K is well worth considering. However, management features are minimal - particularly those for power control - so if you want more PoE capabilities then check out 3Com's BaseLine 2626-PWR Plus. It does cost twice as much but offers 24 PoE ports, Gigabit uplinks, full web management access and support for three per-port power priorities.

D-Link's latest DWL-2100AP wireless AP claims to push the standard 802.11g 54Mbps speed up to 108Mbps when a compatible D-Link card is used. The fact that a wireless LAN can potentially be quicker than a wired one is fantastic news for home users. There are now no worries about degraded performance when switching to wireless, and you can set up your computers wherever you please!
