3. CD Error Correction Tests

Samsung TS-H552U Burner - Page 3

CD Error Correction Tests

In the following tests we check the drive's behavior when reading scratched / defective audio discs. The test discs used were the ABEX series from ALMEDIO.

- ABEX TCD-721R

Errors total
Num: 4494034
Errors (Loudness) dB(A)
Num: 92361
Avg: -66.1 dB(A)
Max: -6.1 dB(A)

Num: 2
Avg: 6.0 Samples
Max: 6 Samples
Total Test Result
69.6 points (of 100.0 maximum)

Average performance with this test disc. A very high total error count, the error loudness is rather high too at -6.1 dB(A) and there were also 2 samples skipped. A total test result score of 69.6 points is indicative of an average test rating.

- ABEX TCD-726

Errors total
Num: 25257
Errors (Loudness) dB(A)
Num: 2295

Total Test Result
84.0 points (of 100.0 maximum)

The Abex 726 test disc is usually much easier for drives to read in most cases. Normally, most drives manage a test result score of 100 or close to but this is not the case here. With an overall score of 84.0 points, the drive's performance can simply be characterized as good.

- CD-Check Audio Test Disc

The CD-Check Test Disc is a very useful tool for evaluating the Sound Reproduction / Error correction capabilities of a CD player. The disc offers a signal combination with disc error patterns to rate the drive's abilities to read music and reproduce it completely. Five tracks on the disc contain a sequence of progressively more difficult tests. These tracks are referred to as Check Level-1 through Check Level-5.

The tracks are reproduced through a software multimedia player (e.g. Windows Media Player). Each level is considered as passed, if the tone is smooth, continuous without interruptions, skipping or looping. The higher the Check Level passed, the more reliable the sound reproduction of the tested drive.

The drive successfully passed three out of five check levels for this test. This is average performance but a"good" drive will read up to the fourth level and the very best drives manage to read the fifth track.

- Summary

The CD error correction capabilities of the drive are average although performance with the ABEX TCD-726 test disc was disappointing where we expected better results.
