1. Features
Lexar JumpDrive Secure II Plus 16GB
Lexar addresses the new 16GB
Secure II Plus JumpDrive to consumers and small business
users who want to securely back up, store and share large files and amounts of data. The device provides 16GB of high
speed memory and differentiates itself with the built-in capacity meter, along with a security
software that encrypts the stored data.
* Built-In Capacity Meter
The onboard capacity meter feature on the JumpDrive Secure II Plus
solves a common problem faced by many USB flash drive users, namely,
how to gauge the available storage space on their drive. The
easy-to-read, 10-bar capacity meter shows
available storage space at a glance, without even plugging it into a
computer. What makes this solution unique is that it requires no
software drivers, no administrative privileges, and it works across
platforms and functions independently of the operating system.
*Advanced Security Features Ensure Data Protection
JumpDrive Secure
II Plus comes pre-loaded with a security software that lets
users protect their data quickly and easily. You can easily create
multiple password-protected areas using 256-bit AES encryption, then
simply drag files into these secure areas for automatic encryption.
When you drag the files out again, they are automatically decrypted.
JumpDrive Secure II Plus provides an added level of security with its special File Shredder feature, which allows users to
securely discard files, including the hidden "digital trail" normally
left behind when files are deleted. Files that have been deleted using the File Shredder feature are securely deleted and cannot be recovered by file recovery tools.
*Transforms Into a Personal PC on the Go
As a special bonus for
Windows-based road warriors, JumpDrive Secure II Plus comes
pre-loaded with a free 30-day trial of Dmailer V7 software, a tool that lets Windows users work securely while on
the move, easily backing up and synchronizing their files, including
Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express.

- Retail package
We have in our hands the retail package of JumpDrive Secure II 16GB USB stick. It's price is around €60 (+ shipping). The retail kit is small and includes only the USB stick in a protective plastic shell.
Let's take a closer look at the module
The outer shell of Lexar JumpDrive Secure II is made out of hard plastic. The external capacity meter is shows the % used space of the drive. The Lexar logo lights up when the flash drive is connected to a host.
2. Benchmarks
Not much to say here. We fired up the HD Tach v3.0.1.0 and prepared the full length test:
The full bench test scans the entire capacity of the module and creates a graph with its average reading/writing performance:
The performance indicates that we have to do with an "entry level" product here.. The reading was linear at an average speed of 20MB/sec, while the writing was slower with 11.4MB/sec.
3. Software
The flash drive comes with the Secure II software pre--installed. The utility helps you encrypt or permanently delete all files from the flash drive. The software utilizes around 32MB:
The SecureII software doesn't need any kind of installation, just double click on the .exe file
The welcome menu appears and includes basic information about the software's functions such as file encryption or shreddering:
JumpDrive Secure II Plus also comes
pre-loaded with a free 30-day trial of Dmailer V7 software, a tool that lets Windows users work securely while on
the move, backing up and synchronizing their files, including
Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express.
The Dmailer software requires installation as well as an internet connection available. Below you can see the typical Firewall function of the software.
The Dmailer software is useful mostly for Windows users that want to back up and synchronize their files at Outlook/Outlook Express among various different computers or laptops. The software is a 30-day trail.
4. Final words
The increased capacity and the very handy capacity-meter of the new Lexar JumpDrive Secure II Plus USB flash drive are definitely the two elements that characterize it. The 16GB of available storage could be enough for your everyday storage needs while on the go or even in the office. The built-in capacity meter is very handy since you get an idea of the remaining space at a glance, without needing to attach the drive to the PC.
The reading/writing performance of the drive should be considered as low, with the benchmark give 20MB/sec for read and just 11MB/sec for write. This means that so that means it will take some extra time to backup or read from the disk to a host, especially when you deal with multiple small files.
The pre-installed SecureII software is simple and fast to use, especially if you are concerned about privacy and you carry important data. The Dmail software (trail) works just fine and could be used to easily synchronize your emails of files among different systems.
All these "extras" are welcomed and makes this product quite attractive. However, we expected a better read/write performance from the drive. If the performance is an important factor for you, then you may do a quick search over the online shops and find other solutions at the same price tag ( €60). Otherwise, the "gadget" character of the new Lexar JumpDrive Secure II Plus USB flash drive could easily grab your interest.
