Introduction
Traxdata is one of the leading brands in the data storage industry and is seen as the pioneer in the field of optical storage media. It is the premium
brand of RITEK, the world's largest optical media manufacturer. The Traxdata
product portfolio includes: CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, Flash Memory
products, compatible ink cartridges and portable storage appliances. In
Europe, Traxdata is distributed by Conrexx Technology B.V. / RITEK Europe.
Due to the growing popularity of Traxata media,
we decided to test their DVD format media with several recorders, both the
latest and older models,
from different manufacturers.
The ID codes of the media we used for our tests are presented in the following
table:
For our recordings we used 23 different drives. The models and their firmware
revisions are summarized in the table below. At the time of the tests, the
firmware versions used were the latest for each drive.
- Test Method
In order to test the writing quality and readability of the burned media,
we used two readers with two software applications:
- The LiteON SOHD-167T with patched firmware being able to read DVD5 up to 16X CAV and DVD9 up to 10X CAV. For the transfer rate tests we used Nero CDSpeed ( v3.30).
- The Plextor PX-712A with the latest available firmware ( v1.05). For scanning the disc, we used PlexTools 2.17 version at 2X CLV reading speed, BURST mode, with middle accuracy.
In general, a "perfect" disc should have a smooth reading curve, very low PIE/POE and zero (0) POF error rates. Most times however, even though a disc has very low PIE/POE error rates, the reading curve may not be smooth containing dropoffs. Due to the fact that we oversped the reading capabilities of the LiteON SOHD-167T, such drops are expected, especially near the outer area of the disc.
The measurements in the following pages should be taken not as the absolute criteria of the burning quality, but as an indication level.

Traxdata has for a long time now released its Double Layer media while
many other manufacturers have yet to do so.
For our tests, we used a DVD-Video content disc, the "Gladiator
Movie - Special Edition" Disc1 with a total size of 6.86GB.
First, we transferred the original movie to the hard disc with DVD Decrypter
in ISO format (single file). We then used the latest version of CopyToDVD
software to burn the image file to the discs.
We burned traxdata media on 15 different burners. More information
about each burner, its respective firmware revision as well as the speed
and the time needed for a complete burn are given in the following table. Click

We burned 4315MB of a DVD-Video compilation on 11 different DVD burners.
We used the maximum allowed writing speed for each drive.
First, we transferred the movie to the hard disc with DVD Decrypter in DVD-Video
format. Then we used the latest version of Nero Burning Rom software to burn
the VIDEO_TS file to the discs. More information about each burner, its
respective firmware revision as well as the speed and the time needed for

Only RW media provided excellent results. DL media produced an error just
before reaching the end of the first layer, while DVD±R media produced
satisfactory results.

Again, most media produced satisfactory results, and in the case
of DL media, we could say excellent. The only exception was that of DVD+RW
4X media which produced an
error near the end.

With DVD+R 16X, the media was not recognised. Other than this, we saw mixed
results with the remaining media and a nice, smooth speed
graph for DL media.

Conclusion
In the following graphs we present the maximum PIE values, as they were reported
by Plextools. According to the DVD specifications, the PIE level should be
lower than 280.
The zero (0) values refer to reported errors where the reading
process stopped, except in the case of the NEC drives where
the ID code of the specific DL media is not included in the drives firmware
and the recording process failed to start.
In general, according to the resulting measurements, the writing quality is
at a fairly good level. Noteworthy is the fact that almost all of the discs
which
were
recorded
were read successfully by our drives and at high speed.
Moreover, we shouldn't blame the media itself for all cases where errors were
encountered since the desired result is dependent on the burner as
well.
