Samsung and LG bolster DVR business

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are bolstering digital video recorder (DVR) business, sparking competition with forerunners in worldwide markets.

Samsung Electronics plans to launch a proprietary stand alone-type 8-channel DVR at the end of this month. Having rolled out a proprietary PC-based DVR in March, LG Electronics is presently working on the development of 4 models of stand alone-type DVRs to unveil in the first half of next year.

Samsung Electronics is outsourcing PC-based and stand alone-type DVRs from Kodicom and IDIS on an original design manufacturing (ODM) basis, respectively, while LG Electronics is outsourcing DVRs from Win4Net, Picaso Info Communication, and BON Electro-telecom.

Samsung Electronics will launch a stand alone-type 8-channel DVR (Model: SHR-4080) toward the end of this month. Installed with 120GB hard disc and can be extended to a maximum capacity of 250GBx4, the new DVR can monitor and record images in real time by channel, featuring functions of 8-channel voice recording, motion detection and search via jog shuttle. It also supports a function of remote monitoring via local area networks.

Under a strategy to gear up for marketing high-end multimedia DVRs combined with network technologies, LG Electronics is concentrating its resources on the development of four stand alone-type DVRs with 1, 4, 9 and 16 channels, respectively. The company intends to roll out these new models in the first half of next year.
