Blu-Ray members to release two-layer 2X recording standard next summer

The Blu-Ray disk related session was held in CEATEC, Japan, and the representatives of the related companies revealed the upcoming plans for the future of Blu-Ray technologies.

Pioneer introduced the present condition of the Blu-Ray disk (BD). According to the roadmap, plans for next year aim to 2x recording achievement.

Mitsubishi Electric Corp. explains the basic outline behind the high-density recording technology, applied in the Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray discs have a very low curvature of 0.1mm, compared to the 0.6mm of a DVD disc. In addition, optimization of the thickness of the protection layer is the key for achieving high-density writing.

Moreover, low power lasers are expected to offer a 2x recording speed, which is currently under development.

The scenario of using non-cartridged Blu-Ray disks is also under development.

Moreover, the standardization of Blu-Ray Disks is in full progress. The physical format was standarized with Ver.1.0 in July 2002, and the new version 1.01 is expected to be applied in July 2004.

Ver.1.1 includes two-layer recording and a maximum capacity of 54GB, while the recording speed will be 2X (72Mbps).
