Websites including ones run by U.S. and UK government agencies were infected on Sunday with code that causes web browsers to stealthy mine digital currencies.
Technology news site The Register reported on Sunday that more than 4,200 sites were infected with a malicious version of a tool known as Browsealoud, developed by British software maker Texthelp. The tool reads out webpages for people with vision problems. The malware
caused inserted software for mining the digital currency Monero to run on computers that visited infected sites, The Register said.
There have been many reports about cyber attacks that have been used software to infect computers in order to secretly mine crypto currencies on behalf of hackers.
Texthelp told The Register that it had shut down the operation by disabling Browsealoud while its engineering team investigated.
There is no voice from any U.S. and British law enforcement agencies yet.
