Oak Technology launches SimpliCD Recorder SDK v2.0 with new photo management features

Oak Technology announced today the availability of its SimpliCD Recording SDK (Software Developer's Kit) Version 2.0. Based on the award-winning SimpliCD recording suite, the kit is a productive and cost-effective method for software developers to add advanced CD recording capabilities directly to their applications.

The SimpliCD Recorder SDK Version 2.0 adds support for new disc formats including Oak's Photo Slideshow as well as the Optical Storage Technology Association's MultiAudio and forthcoming MultiPhoto/Video specifications.

The SimpliCD Recorder SDK has been deployed in HP's newly released HP Memories Disc Creator software, an innovative application that enables consumers to easily organize and personalize their digital photos, save them to CD, and then play slideshows on their PC or television via a DVD player.

Oak's SimpliCD Recording SDK is collection of 32-bit libraries with a programming interface (API) and occupies a small software footprint. The SDK comprises three modules: the data/copy library to create ISO 9660 and Joliet discs, the music library to create Red Book and MultiAudio discs, and the Photo/Video library to create Photo Slideshows and VideoCD discs. In addition to Microsoft® Windows® support, the new SDK version also includes Apple® libraries for software developers creating products for the Macintosh® computer market, and ARM® versions for consumer electronics devices using an embedded ARM processor.

The SimpliCD Recording SDK's innovative Photo Slideshow disc creates a hybrid disc that adds original JPG photographs to a data directory of a VideoCD disc. The resulting Photo Slideshow disc plays back on PCs and compatible DVD players and also provides access to the original, high-resolution JPG photographs on the data portion of the disc. The SDK also supports a vast array of CD recording units including all MMC CD-RW drives and drive types such as ATAPI, SCSI, USB and FireWire.

"With software incorporating SimpliCD Recording SDK 2.0, consumers will be able to store and share their chosen content with friends and family directly from the application they use to manage their content," said Felix Nemirovsky, general manager of Optical Software Media Group. "HP's use of the SimpliCD SDK is an affirmation of the consumer utility of the software," he added.

"HP has always tried to provide consumers with products that are easy to use and deliver user enjoyment," said Pieter van Zee, senior architect at Hp's Digital Imaging Global Business Unit. "The features and small footprint attracted HP to Oak's SimpliCD Recording SDK."

OSTA MultiAudio

The MultiAudio specification was ratified by OSTA in 2001 and is designed to help customers navigate through discs with hundreds of MP3 or WMA music files by allowing music players to read pre-recorded playlists and metadata. Consumers will be able to enjoy their music by selecting previously created playlists or by selecting to listen to a particular genre, artist or album. Oak Technology's SimpliCD Recording Software suite already creates MultiAudio-compliant discs.

OSTA MultiPhoto/Video (MPV)

The MultiPhoto/Video specification from OSTA provides for managing collections of personal digital photos and video clips on discs and other storage media including memory cards, computer hard drives, and the Internet. MPV improves the customer experience by allowing consumers to navigate through discs with hundreds of images and video clips using playlists and to play slideshows with music or interactively browse their pictures. The specification is nearing completion and is expected to be ratified later this year and supported by next generation DVD players and other devices, PC imaging applications, and CD and DVD recording applications. The specification development has received endorsements from many companies and the support of the International Imaging Industry Association (I3A). SimpliCD Recording SDK will fully support the forthcoming MPV specification.
