Pioneer slashes price of DVD-R and DVD-RW media

Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc., Business Solutions Division, the leader in recordable DVD technology, today announced price reductions for its recordable and re-recordable DVD media. The company will offer its write-once General DVD-R media at the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $5.99, and its re-recordable DVD-RW media with an MSRP of $9.99. Both media offer a storage capacity of 4.7 GB.

``DVD-R has been the format of choice since its introduction four years ago because it's the best way for both consumers and professionals to archive and share video and other data,'' said Andy Parsons, senior vice president of industrial video/mass storage sales and marketing, Pioneer Electronics (USA), Business Solutions Division. ``The adoption of both DVD-R and DVD-RW in these two environments has increased substantially over the past year, allowing us to offer these competitive new media prices.''

Pioneer is a member of the DVD Forum, the standards organization for DVD. The company supports the DVD Forum's DVD-R and DVD-RW formats. DVD-R is the only writable DVD format that combines the flexibility of long-term storage of consumer and commercial video content, digital photographs, medical images and other types of data with the ability to be played on most DVD video players and DVD-ROM drives.

DVD-RW's re-recordable capability, coupled with its compatibility with many DVD players and DVD-ROM drives, makes it highly suitable for applications such as consumer video time shifting, DVD authoring prototyping, computer system backups and other storage applications where re-recordability is needed.

Pioneer offered the first DVD-Recordable drive in 1998 and has continued its innovative heritage with the recent introduction of its fourth-generation DVR-A04 drive. The DVR-A04 offers multi-format compatibility between DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R and CD-RW with an MSRP of $499. Combined with the new lower cost of its DVD-R and DVD-RW media, Pioneer has provided users with a cost-effective solution for a wide array of applications.
