A large industry support for the DVD-RW format (?)

"...Pioneer's DVD recorder (DVR-7000) and drive (DVR-A03) are based on the DVD-R - (record once) and DVD-RW - (re-recordable) disc formats. These global standards are supported by the DVD Forum, the RWPPI and a broad range of leading companies around the world. This document gives insight in this support and provides the reader with quotes from selected companies about DVD-RW and their partnership with Pioneer..."

DVD Forum

The DVD Forum is a voluntary association of about 230 hardware manufacturers, software firms and other users of digital versatile disc (DVD) formats. The Forum has two major purposes:

1- To establish a single DVD format for each DVD application product, including revisions, improvements and enhancements for the benefit of consumers and users;

2- To promote broad acceptance of DVD formats on a worldwide basis, including the entertainment, consumer electronics and IT industries as well as the general public. More information can be found at www.dvdforum.org.

The DVD-R and DVD-RW formats, approved by the DVD Forum, were designed to achieve compatibility with existing DVD video players and DVD-ROM drives. The format offers immediate and long-range applications for both video and data storage. DVD-R provides maximum compatibility, and DVD-RW offers tremendous flexibility that illustrates the inherent advantages of disc over tape. Both DVD-R and DVD-RW discs have the same 4.7 Gigabytes capacity of DVD-Video discs, however DVD-RW discs can be re-written up to one thousand times. DVD-R discs can be recorded only once, so there is no danger that precious images will be inadvertently erased, making DVD-R ideal for archiving.

RWPPI

DVD-R and DVD-RW are actively promoted by the member companies of the RW Products Promotion Initiative (RWPPI), an industry association established in May 2000.

RWPPI's aim is to effectively popularise and promote DVD-R/RW products, commercial products that are developed on the basis of DVD-R/RW standards allowing recording and playback of DVD discs. Moreover, the organisation strives to arbitrate problems and promote customer satisfaction by proposing a wide range of standard specifications and ensuring hardware/software compatibility.

As of today, 48 companies are members of RWPPI: Aiwa Co.,Ltd., Almedio Inc., Advanced Media Corporation, Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co., Ltd., CMC Magnetics Corporation, Conexant Systems Co., Ltd., Cyberlink Inc., Daewoo Electronics Co., Ltd., Eastman Kodak Company, Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd., Fujifilm Microdevices Co., Ltd., Funai Electric Co., Ltd., Hitachi Maxell, Ltd., InterVideo Japan Inc., Japan Broadcasting Corporation, Kenwood Corporation, LG Electronics Inc., MediaTek Inc., Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., NEC Corporation, Nikon Corporation, Oak Technology, K.K., Orion Electric Co., Ltd., Onkyo Corporation, Optodisc Technology Corporation, Pioneer Corporation, Pioneer Video Corporation, Plannet Associate Co., Ltd., Prodisc Technology Inc., Ritek Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd., Sharp Corporation, Shinano Kenshi Co., Ltd., SKC Co., Ltd., Sonic Solutions, Sony Corporation, Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd., Teac Corporation, Texas Instruments Japan Limited, TDK Corporation, Thomson Multimedia Inc., Unitech Japan Inc., Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC Media Co), Yamaha Corporation, Zoran Japan Co.,Ltd. TDK: "DVD-RW offers the best choice"

"TDK has been a long time member of the DVD Forum and has actively been developing DVD recordable formats introduced by the forum, explains Jean Paul Eekhout, Marketing Manager, TDK Recording Media Europe. As leading manufacturer of high quality recording media, TDK is committed to provide our customers with the latest optical storage formats. TDK Recording Media Europe and Pioneer Europe have co-operated on various occasions to promote DVD-RW, including the European RWPPI kick-off meeting at IFA 2001.

"Taking a consumer perspective, TDK believes that the DVD-R/DVD-RW format offers the best choice in both write once and rewritable recording formats. The DVD-R has indisputably the widest compatibility with DVD playback devices and DVD-RW offers the necessary rewritability for consumer post-VCR applications while maintaining good playback compatibility with many DVD players.

Maxell: "Pioneer is our long term partner to promote DVD-R/RW technology"

"DVD-RW is one of the official format developed by DVD Forum, and is suitable for video recording applications, explains Atsuki Hirose, European Technical Service Engineer, Maxell Europe Limited. Maxell supports DVD-R format too, which is also expected to grow very fast in the future digital video segment. This format offers excellent compatibility with existing DVD drives and DVD video players.

"Maxell is already supplying DVD-R and DVD-RW media in the European market since last year to support the PC writer market. We are now expanding our production capacity for DVD-R and developing new DVD-R with faster recording speed capability.

"Maxell always intend to have a good relationship with hardware manufacturers because the market is driven by the drives. However the market would not exist without good quality media. Maxell, as a market leader in data media, has developed strong relationship with all major drive & system manufacturers in order to bring the latest media technologies into the market. Pioneer is our long term partner to promote DVD-R/RW technology."
