Verbatim Showcases 4.7GB DVD+R and DVD+RW Discs at DV Expo

Verbatim Corporation featured its DataLifePlus 4.7GB DVD+R and DVD+RW media at DV Expo this week at the Jacob K. Javits in New York City. Both the Write-Once and ReWriteable discs are certified for 2.4x recording speed (equivalent to 3.32MB/sec or 22x CD-R performance)--the fastest recording speed of any current DVD format. Verbatim's DVD+R and DVD+RW media can be used with drives and recorders offered by industry leaders such as Dell, Hewlett Packard Company, Philips Electronics, Ricoh Company Ltd., and Sony Corporation.

Verbatim DVD+R and +RW discs can be played back by the vast majority of DVD-ROM drives and DVD video players in use today. Broad compatibility, a low storage cost and high-speed recording make the discs ideal for sharing computer data, home videos, photos, and music.

With certification for recording speeds of up to 2.4x, PC and consumer electronics users will have the assurance that Verbatim's new +RW and +R media provide optimum recording at the full-rated speed and that the media not only withstands the higher speeds of the new drives, it maximizes their performance.

To achieve 2.4x DVD recording while maintaining the quality and reliability users have come to expect from DataLifePlus media, Verbatim uses advanced technologies and manufacturing techniques. The DVD+RW media incorporates its Super Eutectic Recording Layer (SERL) technology, and the DVD+R media utilizes a patented Metal Azo dye for the recording layer. These technologies also contribute to the high durability and light resistance of Verbatim +R/+RW media.

"The new +R/+RW drives that are being rolled out by HP, Philips and Sony are priced about the same as the early DVD+RW drives, even though they now offer write-once support," said Tim Clatterbuck, Verbatim's director of optical storage marketing. "The added write-once capability combined with affordable pricing and Microsoft's support for the +RW formats with the Mt. Rainer specification will accelerate drive sales and ultimately media sales."

Gartner, a market research firm, recently reported that manufacturers shipped more than 600,000 DVD recording drives in 2001 and predicted that number will double in 2002. Gartner also forecast that the number of DVD recording drives shipped will reach 3.9 million in 2003 and 14.3 million in 2004.

Verbatim DVD+R and +RW discs can be played back by the vast majority of DVD-ROM drives and DVD video players in use today. Broad compatibility, a low storage cost and high-speed recording make the discs ideal for sharing computer data, home videos, photos, and music.

With Gigabytes of capacity and more than 1,000 rewrites, Verbatim DVD+RW media is a cost-effective solution for storing files that may require updating or editing. For files that must be protected from alteration or erasure, Verbatim DVD+R write-once media provides users with the security they need. The high capacity and 100-year data life also make the +R media an excellent storage solution for backups and archiving.

By supporting both the random access of CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) for data storage and the sequential access of CLV (Constant Linear Velocity) for streaming video or audio, Verbatim DVD+RW and DVD+R media can be used for both data storage and audio/video applications. CAV can be used in high-speed, random-access applications and CLV can be used in real-time recording applications.

The DVD+R/+RW format utilizes lossless linking technology to support multi-session writing, allowing users to write (and read) additional data and video segments without finalizing the sessions. Support for lossless linking enhances playback compatibility and allows different users to add recording sessions to discs that have not been finalized. With support for lossless linking and the new Mount Ranier specification, DVD+R/+RW users will be able to write to any sector on the disc with full defect management capabilities and convenient drag-and-drop capabilities.

Verbatim packages its high-quality +RW and +R media in standard jewel box cases and DVD video tall boxes. While the discs inside the packages are the same, the difference in packaging provides consumers with a quick and easy way to distinguish between discs used for computer storage and those used to store movies and videos,.

Verbatim and MCC are original members of the DVD+RW Alliance that developed the DVD+RW format.
