Oak announces first CD Recording controller!

"...Oak Technology today announced its strategy for bridging its compact disc optical recording technology into a broad range of consumer applications, and introduced one of the industry's first CD Recording controller optimized for non-PC audio and video recording applications.

Oak's new OTI-8001 controller, the first in a family of Oak solutions for consumer applications and appliances, will enable the market for affordable CD-audio and video player/recorders. In developing this device, Oak leveraged its state-of-the-art optical recording expertise to produce an efficient and affordable integrated solution that meets the criteria for the consumer electronics industry.

"We believe optical storage read/write platforms will become ubiquitous in non-PC applications such as digital video recorders, digital cameras and camcorders, boom boxes and audio CD player/recorders. We also feel the next wave of optical recording opportunities will replace tapes in consumer recording devices. Oak is at the forefront of this technology revolution, and our goal is to enable this emerging market," Sohn continued. "As we go forward, we believe optical recording applications for iAppliances will fuel the next stage of our growth." noted Oak Technology president and CEO Young Sohn.

Oak's OTI-8001 controller is an 8X Read/8X Write CD-Recordable/ReWritable Controller that provides one of the highest levels of integration of any CD-R/RW controller to date. The highly automated controller is intended for use in a recordable audio CD system with an inexpensive microprocessor and a minimal number of additional components. The OTI-8001's CD encoder's design also reduces the complexity and size of firmware and firmware storage required.

The OTI-8001 can be used with Oak's OTI-9073 analog front end signal processor and a hardware and firmware reference design to create one of the industry's most fully integrated, flexible and cost effective system solutions and significantly reduce the OEM's time-to-market. The OTI-9073 is optimized for use with Oak's family of optical storage controllers to create a low-power, two-chip solution for CD-RW drive applications. Oak's OTI-9073 front-end processor also simplifies drive design and contributes to a lower CD-RW system cost by eliminating a significant number of external components compared to conventional analog front-end solutions.

Oak's OTI-8001 audio recordable CD-RW controller is sampling now and will be available in production quantities in first quarter, 2001..."
