Oak announces new chipset for portable CDR-W drives

"...Oak Technology today announced its second-generation front-end signal processor for high performance CD-RW drive applications. The highly integrated device supports CD-RW write speeds up to 20X and read speeds up to 40X. It is optimized for use with Oak's OTI-979X family of optical storage controllers to create a low-power, two-chip solution ideal for portable and desktop CD-RW drive applications.

The OTI-9073 Analog Front End provides a 67 percent increase in write speed over Oak's original OTI-9071 front-end solution, introduced earlier this year. The OTI-9073 is designed for use with Oak's industry-leading 16X OTI-9795 optical storage controller, as well as even higher performance CD-RW and combo CD-RW/DVD drive controllers scheduled for release in early 2001. The new OTI-9073 front end processor, combined with one of Oak's single chip controllers and a hardware and firmware reference design, creates one of the industry's most fully integrated, flexible and cost effective system solution, and significantly reduces the OEM's time-to-market.

An all-CMOS design with advanced power management modes reduces power consumption below 900 milliwatts. Oak's OTI-907X front-end processors also simplify drive design and contribute to a lower CD-RW system cost by eliminating a significant number of external components compared to conventional analog front-end solutions, which use more than 100 components.

Oak's OTI-9073 analog front end for use with Oak's optical storage controller family is sampling now and will be available in production quantities in first quarter, 2001. Pricing is $7.50 each in quantities of 10,000.."
