Elantec Semiconductor Introduces a New Laser Driver IC for the CD-R-RW Optical Disk Market

"..Elantec Semiconductor a leader in high-performance analog ICs, today introduced a new small form-factor laser driver IC targeted towards the consumer audio segment of the CD-R/RW optical disk drive market. The EL6277C offers industry-standard functions compliant with the Orange Specification Standard for CD-R and CD-RW write speed formats. The EL6277C joins the successful Elantec family of laser driver ICs designed for the rapid-growth optical disk storage markets.

The EL6277C integrates the three channels needed to control the read, erase, and write laser power levels, an output current driver, and a high frequency modulator (HFM) oscillator that will automatically disable during the write operation. This innovative integration reduces board space, component count, and provides the flexibility needed to optimize the design.

Steve Sacarisen, Elantec's Director of Strategic Marketing, Optical Products Group said, "The CD-R/RW market is expanding into the consumer audio segment driven by new audio recording and dubbing applications. The EL6277C is targeted at cost-sensitive four-time and eight-time CD-R/RW drive applications. The EL6277C is pin-compatible with our higher speed EL6253 laser driver that can be used for greater than eight-time CD-R/RW drive applications.'' Pricing for the EL6277C is $2.50 in 1,000-piece quantities. The EL6277C is available in the 16-pin QSOP package and is in production.."
