BlackBerry And EnStream To Provide Secure Mobile Payments System

Canadian BlackBerry Ltd said on Thursday it has signed a agreement with EnStream LP, a mobile payments company, to provide a secure platform for transactions between banks and consumers.

Under the deal, EnStream, a joint venture owned by Canada's three large wireless carriers (Rogers Communications Inc, BCE Inc and Telus Corp.), would use BlackBerry infrastructure so financial institutions and mobile operators can securely store sensitive payment card details on any smartphone capable of using a near field communication (NFC) tag.

The deal is Blackberry's latest move to expand its services business, as the company has failed to compete with Apple and Samsung in the smartphone business. The company is focused on expanding in machine-to-machine communications, and its QNX software already wirdely used in the automobile industry.
