Google Considers Buying Streaming-video site Twitch

Google is reportedly in talks to acquire video-streaming service Twitch, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Sunday.

Officials at Google and Twitch have not commented on the report.

The report said the discussions between the parties were at an early stage.

Twitch has since become a premier destination for video game live-streams, and has effectively turned titles as offbeat as Pokemon into spectator sports. It currently has more than 1 million unique users broadcasting on its platform every month. Twitch functionality is built into both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game consoles.

While Google's YouTube is otherwise the king of online video, it mostly missed the boat on livestreaming.

In September, Twitch raised $20 million in funding from Thrive Capital, WestSummit Capital and Take-Two Interactive Software Inc, among other parties.
