Samsung Unveils New Media Streaming Device

Seagate Technology's s Samsung HDD business unit is shipping its new Samsung Wireless media device for mobile users.

The Samsung-branded device is actually based on the a new family of Wireless Plus hard drives that Seagate announced last week.

Seagate acquired Samsung's mechanical hard drive operations in 2011, but China's Ministry of Commerce had objected to the deal. In order to close the transaction, the regulator said that that Seagate should continue independent operations of Samsung's brand, but that Seagate could apply to have this condition reconsidered in one year. It seems that two and a half years later, China's Ministry of Commerce still has not removed its conditions.

Anyway, the Samsung Wireless media device is an 1TB wireless hard drive accessory for consumers' mobile devices (smart phones & tablets). It streams content wirelessly (via WiFi) to up to five devices. It supports Android 2.3 or higher, Windows 8/7/Vista/XP SP2, and Mac OS X 10.6 or later. It has long battery life, up to 7 hours. It can connect to other wireless networks to provide internet access in addition to local streaming. Up to 5 mobile devices can connect to it at once. The small device also comes with a USB 3.0 port. Also, users can use the Samsung Wireless to charge their mobile devices.

The Samsung Wireless is available globally for MSRP of $179.00.
