HP Returns To The Smartphone Market With Two Phablets

Today marks Hewlett-Packard's re-entry to market for smartphones and tablets with a pair of phablets that will debut in India.

HP announced a the six-inch Slate 6 VoiceTAband the seven-inch Slate 7 VoiceTab devices - both based on Google's Android 4.2 operating and can be enabled using your voice.

HP says the devices have a quad-core processor without identifing its maker (Qualcomm, Nvidia, MediaTek ?), they come with 16GB of internal storage and will support MicroSD cards of up to 32GB for additional storage. Both devices come equipped with a 3G Dual SIM Dual Standby feature.

The IPS display is 1,280 pixels by 720 pixels on the Slate 6 and 1,280 by 800 on the Slate 7. Other features include front-facing stereo speakers, a two-megapixel front-facing camera and five-megapixel rear camera with flash.

HP in 2011 shut down the company's webOS division, which had been built out of the smartphone company Palm.

HP obviously plays it safe by choosing to enter the growing Indian market first, as local phone vendors require no service contracts. HP is also enjoying a high popularity in India being the the top brand among PCs in the country, according to IDC.
