AMD Releases 5 GHz Processor

AMD today confirmed previous information with the release of an ultra-fast member of its AMD FX family of CPUs, the AMD FX-9590 processor clocked at 5 GHz.

AMD actually added two eight-core models to its FX line - the FX-9590, 5 GHz Max Turbo and the FX-9370, 4.7 GHz Max Turbo.

These 8-core CPUs have been designed to power gaming desktop rigs and will be available initially in PCs through system integrators beginning this summer. The base clock on the FX-9590 will be 4.7GHz and the base clock of the FX-9370 will be 4.4GHz. In addition, the chips will have a 220W TDP (!), meaning that these parts will target system integrators first and will be installed in systems with advanced CPU cooling configurations.

The new 5 GHz FX-9590 and 4.7 GHz FX-9370 feature the "Piledriver" architecture, are unlocked for easy overclocking and pave the way for enthusiasts to enjoy higher CPU speeds and related performance gains. Additionally, these processors feature AMD Turbo Core 3.0 technology to dynamically optimize performance across CPU cores.

At its E3 booth, AMD had a demonstration of game play across five high definition displays with aA total resolution of 9600 by 1080 pixels. The game footage played smoothly across the displays that wrapped nearly 180 degrees around the gamer.

Seperately, AMD today announced at E3 exclusive collaboration with Square Enix to optimize "THIEF" for the Graphics Core Next architecture in select AMD Radeon graphics processors, as well as the x86 and graphics architectures featured in AMD A-Series APUs. Developed in conjunction with the AMD Gaming Evolved program, "THIEF" will leverage the capabilities of AMD Radeon graphics processors including AMD Eyefinity multi-display technology for panoramic gaming, AMD CrossFire multi-GPU technology for supreme performance, and DirectX 11 rendering.
