Facebook said Monday it was buying Face.com, the company that now provides facial-recognition technology used by the world's largest social network to help users identify and tag photos.

"By working with Facebook directly, and joining their team, we'll have more opportunities to build amazing products that will be employed by consumers - that's all we've ever wanted to do," the Face.com team wrote in a blog post.

Facebook's features related to sharing and handling of photos is powered by Face.com's technology - scanning of a user's uploaded photo, comparing faces in the snapshots with previous pictures and matching faces and suggest name tags. However, the same technology has spurred concerns about user privacy.

Facebook did not disclose terms of the deal, which is expected to close in coming weeks.
