Intel Ivy Bridge based Xeon E3s And Low Power Atom Chips For Servers Coming This Year

Intel plans to release Ivy Bridge based Xeon E3s along with low-power Atom chips dubbed " Centerton" targeted at the micro server segment later this year.

The new line of Xeon E3 LV (Low-Voltage) processors sporting the firm's next generation architecture - Ivy Bridge - and use the firm's 3D Tri-Gate transistors and a 22nm manufacturing process to improve performance without using more power (45W~20W).

For micro servers looking for an even smaller power footprint of just 6 Watts, Intel is introducing an Atom-based system on a chip, dubbed "Centerton." These new 64-bit chips will feature two Atom processor cores, ECC for the memory system, Intel Virtualization technology and of course, software compatibility with the rest of datacenter environments. They are on track for release in the second half of this year.
