Google Applies With FCC To Test Mysterious Entertainment Device

Google is developing an entertainment device that could be anything from a new Android smartphone, a remote control for Google TV or even new hardware, according to a document submitted to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

According to the document, Google is developing an "entertainment device" that requires testing outside the laboratory environment. The device is in the prototyping phase and will be modified prior to final compliance testing.

Google is asking fom permission from FCC to test the stability of home WiFi networks using the new device, which utilizes a standard WiFi/Bluetooth module. Testing will include functional testing of all subsystems, including WiFi and Bluetooth radio.

"Users will connect their device to home WiFi networks and use Bluetooth to connect to other home electronics equipment," the document reads.

Google engineers in New York, Los Angeles and Cambridge will test the new device in order to reveal possible real world engineering issues and test the stability of the home WiFi networks that will support the device, as well as the basic functionality of the device.
