PlayStation Vita Teardown, Launch Details

A quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor co-developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba is at the heart of Sony's Vita handheld, which will be released in the U.S./Canada on Feb. 22 with an impressive game lineup.

According to a teardown by UBM TechInsights, Sony packed into the Playstation Vita a five-inch OLED multi-touch screen supporting 16 million colors and possibly manufactured by Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) Co Ltd.. The Vita also sports a touch-sensitive back panel, allowing gamers to play using their fingers as they are holding the device.

Playstation Vita also incorporates a GPS device and a three-axis gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass. Sony sells a version supporting both 3G and Wi-Fi as well as a Wi-Fi-only model.

The device is powered by a custom quad-core ARM processor. Sony's Cell processor partners - IBM and Toshiba - created the CXD5315GG, a four core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore CPU, with Toshiba to provide the multichip memory package and the system memory of the device.

Qualcomm provides the MDM6200 HSPA+ GSM modem in the Vita, as well as the PM8028 power management IC.

Avago also offered six socket wins in the Playstation Vita, mainly used on the device's communications board. Kionix contributed to the accelerometer and Marvell for the Wi-Fi chip.
