2GHz Dual-Core Samsung Smartphones Coming Next Year

Samsung aims at bringing the power of desktop PCs to smartphones with the release of a smartphones powered by 2 GHz dual-core CPUs in 2012.

"We are planning to release a 2Ghz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year," a "high-ranking" Samsung executive was quoted as saying by the today's South Korean Maeli Business Daily newspaper. "This product will have the data processing capacities of a regular PC," Samsing exec added.

The paper added that Samsung may sell its new high-end mobile processors - possibly codenamed "Orion" - to other mobile phone makers. The new CPUs will be likely released under the company's "Exynos" brand, Samsung's brand name for its application processor family. Announced last Februaty, "Exynos" associates Samsung's "smart and green" strategy adopted by its semiconductor devices and solutions developed specifically to support the stringent performance and power requirements of mobile devices. Exynos originates from the Greek words smart (exypnos) and green (prasinos).

Samsung has already started production of its 1GHz dual-core application processor.

Samsung is also said to be considering separate sales of the CPU units for other smartphone makers. Samsung has been mainly manufacturing mobile CPU for its own product lines, but is planning to expand into mobile processor sales under its new brand, Exynos.
