Nokia Unveils E6 and X7 Smartphones Based on New Symbian OS

Nokia unveiled on Tuesday two new smartphone models running on improved Symbian software, a measure aimed at stemming customer defections to rivals like Apple.

Nokia announced the Nokia E6 and the Nokia X7, two new smartphones aimed at business people and entertainment enthusiasts respectively. The two devices are the first Nokia smartphones to contain the updated Symbian software, with new icons and usability enhancements such as improved text input, a faster browser and refreshed Ovi Maps.

"We are further strengthening Nokia's smartphone portfolio with these two new devices, both of which offer a more beautiful and intuitive user experience that will soon also be available for the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01," said Jo Harlow, head of Nokia's Smart Devices business. "With these new products and more Symbian devices and user enhancements coming in the near future, we are confident we can keep existing Nokia smartphone customers engaged, as well as attract new first-time and competitor smartphone users."

The Nokia E6 an upgrade for many existing Nokia E71 and E72 users. The sleek business smartphone with a full QWERTY keypad and a 2.46-inch LCD touch display offering 16mn colours and a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels. Designed using premium materials such as glass and stainless steel, the device comes in a compact size. The Nokia E6 also offers out-of-the-box Microsoft messaging experience on a business smartphone, including access to Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Communicator Mobile and Microsoft SharePoint.



The E6 comes with 8GB of internal memory and support for MicroSD cards up to 32GB. The battery is a removable Nokia BP-4L 1500mAH ? rated for up to a month on standby and 7h30m talk-time over 3G - longer over GSM connections. The phone offers Pentaband 2G/3G network support for world travellers and WiFi connectivity through 802.11 b/g/n. There?s also Bluetooth 3.0 with support for stereo headphones.

The device measures 115.5 x 59 x 10.5mm and weighs 133g. The 8-megapixel full focus (EDOF) camera has a dual-LED flash, 2X digital zoom (3X in video mode) and offers HD 720p video recording at 25fps.

The Nokia E6 is expected to ship in Q2 2011 - before taxes and subsidies it will cost €340. North American availability is expected in Q3.

The Nokia X7 is an entertainment-focused smartphone with a 4" AMOLED display offering 16 million colours and a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels, an 8 Megapixel camera with a dual LED flash for capturing pictures and 720p video. The Nokia X7 is made from a combination of stainless steel and glass and it comes preloaded with the Galaxy on Fire HD and Asphalt 5 HD games.

The Nokia X7 comes with 8GB memory card pre-installed, with up to 350MB built-in operating memory. It can support MicroSD cards up to 32GB.

The device measures 119.7 x 62.8 x 11.9mm (thinner at the edges) and weighs 146g. It offers Pentaband 2G/3G network connectivity and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi support. It offers a 3.5mm audio connector for headphones.

The 1200mAH battery is rated for up to 450 hours standby and 4.5 hours talktime on a 3G network - longer over GSM.

The Nokia X7 comes with free walk-and-drive navigation through the latest Ovi Maps. There's messaging through Nokia Email and users can connect to Facebook, Twitter and RenRen (in China) using Nokia Social.

The Nokia X7 will be available in Q2 2011 and, before taxes and operator subsidies, it will cost €380.



The Nokia E6 and Nokia X7 are also the first smartphones to contain the complete update of the Symbian software, known as symbian Anna.

This update offers a host of usability enhancements, including fresh, new icons, improved text input, a faster internet browsing experience and a refreshed Ovi Maps application with improved search and new public transport routes. The renewed software also offers a set of new features aimed at business users in particular, including true enterprise grade security with hardware accelerated encryption, and new e-mail features such as full meeting request support.

Symbian Anna will also be made available for owners of the Nokia N8, C7, C6-01 and E7 in the coming months, Nokia said.

The most obvious and visible feature of Symbian Anna is the new icons.



Text input has also been improved: there?s the long-awaited portrait QWERTY input, plus a split screen when entering text into web pages and apps, so users don't lose sight of what they're filling in.



The browser now offers faster performance and is easier to use.



The usability of the photo gallery has also been improved.



For business users, the update also includes instant messaging with Microsoft Communicator Mobile, email enhancements that include full meeting request support and hardware-accelerated device encryption.

For version watchers, the application versions available in Symbian Anna are:

Enhanced Browser (v7.3): high value touch UI improvements, including URL entry bar, always visible 'Go Back' and extended toolbar buttons and search-integrated address field; better user responsiveness, faster history navigation and page loading, split screen virtual Qwerty keyboard.

Enhanced Ovi Maps (v3.06): smarter search; Check-in to Facebook, Twitter, Foursquareor local social networks; ability to share places via email and SMS, and also with friends using non-Nokia phones; public transport network lines view; update and download full country maps via WLAN

Enhanced Ovi Store (v2.06.xx): improved search, including auto-complete, spell-checking and Internet search engine optimization and error fixes; increased file size limits for downloading over WLAN

Enhanced Social (v1.3): status updates in contact card, ability to retweet and view follower list in Twitter, higher resolution image uploads, ability to add caption to images

Enhanced Ovi Suite (v3.x): works seamlessly with the latest version of Ovi Suite to update the device software, download free street maps, download new music and discover the latest mobile apps, back up the device to keep content safe, and sync content with Ovi.

Nokia also today announced that its Ovi Store has grown by nearly eight times over the last year and now reaches up to 5 million downloads per day, propelled by the latest Symbian devices - the Nokia N8, Nokia C6-01, Nokia C7 and Nokia E7 - which account for about 15 percent of the daily downloads.
