Mitsubishi Develops Laser Backlight LCD TV Prototype

Mitsubishi Electric has developed a 46" "Laser Backlight LCD TV" prototype, which uses laser diodes for part of its backlight source, and prototyped a 46-inch TV.

The company has already commercialized a rear projection TV using RGB color lasers. By using only the red color laser, it managed to cut the manufacturing costs.

The backlight TV uses cyan LEDs and red laser light sources. The result is about 1.3 times wider color gamut, compared to the the company's currently available LCD-46MDR1 LCD TV. Cyan LEDs are used for producing the green and blue colors. The vividness of the red color seems to be significantly improved by the new dual-laser approach, acording to the company.

The 46-inch LCD TV edge-lit prototype also features an optical system that actually mixing the light coming out from each red laser diode and cyan LED, in an effort to minimize the unevenness of the produced color as the laser diodes have different divergent angles than the LEDs.

Other features such as brightness, contrast ratio and power consumption of the new TV are almost the same as those of Mitsubishi Electric's LCD TVs using white LED backlight.

Mitsubishi plans to commercialize the Laser Backlight LCD TV in Japan later this year.
