Apple is offering iPhone and iPod touch users to download the newest version of its mobile operating system, called iOS 4.
The new operating system is the heart of the new iPhone 4. The original iPhone and iPod Touch users won't be able to upgrade to iOS 4, as Apple says the hardware on these devices is not supported. iPhone 3G owners will get the update, but some of the features below won't be available, Apple said. Also, if you have an iPad (which runs iOS 3.2), iOS 4 will arrive for you only in September.
The new iOS 4 will allow users to run multiple applications at the same time (multitasking) as well as feature a gaming platform, a built-in advertising system and Apple's proprietary iBook application.
Users will also be able to organize their apps into folders, and there are several enhancements to the built-in mail program, including the ability to keep related messages connected in "threads."
The new software will come standard on the iPhone 4, which will arrive on Thursday to all those who have already pre-ordered it last week.
Now you can run third-party apps - and switch between them instantly - without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.
Organize apps into folders with drag-and-drop simplicity. Get faster access to your favorites and browse and manage up to 2160 apps.
See messages from all your accounts in a unified inbox, organize messages by threads, open attachments in third-party apps, and more.
