Samsung And Sony Failed Expand LCD Deal

Sony and Samsung discussed at a meeting on Monday further developing cooperation but not raising flat panel supplies to the Japanese firm as widely speculated, Yonhap news agency reported Tuesday.

Sony chief executive Howard Stringer visited Seoul on Monday for a meeting with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee.

Although Sony described the meeting as one of its regular discussions with flat-screen partner Samsung, analysts e speculated that Sony would seek to secure a stable LCD supply from Samsung, the world's largest maker of LCD panels, as the Japanese company aims to make its TV business profitable.

The two firms, which operate a LCD joint venture in Korea, discussed steps to move their cooperation forward but did not go into further business details such as boosting panel supplies, South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted an unnamed Samsung official as saying.

Samsung and Sony joined hands in 2004 to set up an LCD panel making joint venture called S-LCD Corp. The joint venture makes panels measuring between 40 and 50 inches.
