Ubisoft PC Game DRM Requires Online Connetion to Play

Ubisoft has applied a new DRM scheme for its PC game releases that requires users to have an internet connection enabled in order to play the game.

Gamespy.com reported on Thusday that Ubisoft would allow users to run PC games without a disc in the drive for authentication, meaning that they will be able no limit in the installation of each game as many times as they want in diferent PCs. Ubisoft's games will be made accessible through Ubi.com online accounts. Games' saves will be stored remotely on Ubi servers, allowing users to access to their game saves on any machine.

Since authentication will be handled through the users' Ubi.com accounts, they will always need to connect to their Ubi.com account to authenticate before playing. Users will need to be online the whole time when they play the game.

There will be no support at all for offline play, according to Ubisoft.

Ubisoft's new DRM platform will debut in "The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom" FilePlanet beta game, GameSpy reported. The company plans to implement the new DRM system in the majority of its upcoming PC games.
