Korean Scientists Claim Breakthrough in OLED screen Technology

South Korean scientists claimed to have developed an efficient "true blue" material that can accelerate the development of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays.

The breakthrough by Jin Sung-ho's team at Pusan National University is significant because it can accelerate the development of color OLEDs that have the potential to replace conventional liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

The discovery would allow the creation of "energy efficient" OLED displays with increased lifetime and better picture quality .

OLEDs must be made to mix green, red and blue lights, in order to offer maximum color and clarity. Scientists have been able to make efficient green and red organic light-emitting materials in the past although they have run into complications with blue.

Past blue materials faded more quickly than the other two colors, and those made tended towards a greener shade rather than being true blue.

The latest developmen has been funded by the S. korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and published in the latest online issue of Advanced Functional Materials.
