Samsung, LG Promote Blu-ray /HD DVD Combo Players

Despite the hit levied Friday by Warner against HD DVD, both LG and Samsung are promoting their dual-format HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc players at CES.

Samsung showcases the BD-UP5000 combo BD/HD DVD player at CES. The Korean company believes that there is still a market segment that could use an HD DVD player, especially consumers who already own HD DVD movies. After all, the 30% of studios still support HD DVD (Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and DreamWorks).

Samsung's BD-UP5000 Blu-ray player is currently sold at U.S. $800 and suppports the HDi interactive features of of HD DVD, while its compliant with the BD-ROM Profile 1.1 specifications.

LG Electronics seems to also embrace its rival's marketing strategy and believes that there is still market space for its second generation dual-format BD/HD DVD player, the BH200. Priced at U.S $799, the player is also compatible with the BD/HD DVD interactive features.

Both Korean's manufacturers claim that the consumers' demand for such dual-format players will decide their future. Even if HD DVD waves the white flag, it would take some time until the format become obsolete.
