Sometime yesterday, Apple reached a significant milestone: it sold its one millionth iPhone. Some had predicted this would happen earlier, but Apple itself only committed selling a million smartphones during its current financial quarter, which isn't up for several more weeks.
"One million iPhones in 74 days -- it took almost two years to achieve this milestone with iPod," said Steve Jobs, Apple?s CEO. ?We can?t wait to get this revolutionary product into the hands of even more customers this holiday season."
Jobs is obliquely referring to Apple's plan to release its smartphone in Europe in the next few months. It has revealed no details on this, but leaks indicate the iPhone will be introduced in November by three carriers in three different countries.
Price Cut Spurring Sales?
Apple's announcement today made no reference to the recent dramatic cut in the price of the iPhone. Last week, the price for the 8 GB version of the iPhone was cut by a third. It now sells for $400, which is $200 off the original price.
In addition, the company is dropping the 4 GB version of this product from its lineup.
This move is expected to have increased sales of the iPhone, though, again, nothing was said about this in today's announcement.
