ATI R600 Launch Delayed Until Q2

AMD confirmed that it will delay the release of the highly-anticipated R600 graphics processor unit.

AMD has cancelled its press event that had been scheduled to take place on March 11th in the Netherlands, where the company would present its first Direct X 10 series of GPUs. The event will take place sometime in the second quarter of 2007.

AMD's R600 series of graphics cards were expected to be among the main attractions in the company's booth at the upcoming CeBIT trade show. AMD said that it has revised its strategy and will launch the new product later when the DirectX 10 and 3D graphics will be widely accepted, driven by the popularity of Windows Vista.

AMD's top-of-the-line R600 model is expected to have a sizzling core clock speed of around 800MHz with GDDR4 memory running at somewhere between 1GHz and 1.1GHz.

It seems that rival Nvidia will be the sole manufactures of graphics cards that will showcase DirectX 10 products at CeBIT.
