Sony has updated the PS3 firmware to ver 1.3, the update includes support for the upcoming BD Remote controller which goes on sale in Japan on Dec 7th.
In addition to this it adds HDMI output format setting in BD / DVD setting, HDD data can be backed up on other media like Memory Stick or SD card and finally an option to restore the PS3 to factory settings so you can put it up on Ebay.
The firmware allows users to select the output format of the BD and DVD video when you are using an HDMI cable. By selecting the "Automatic" option, the PS3 chooses the appropriate output format for your TV that is connected through HDMI. The "RGB" and "Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr" options will send the video signal to your TV in the corresponding formats.
The Backup feature allows HDD data to be backed up to Memory Sticks or SD cards. There is also a restore feature, which allows data to restored to the HDD. Sony does not guarantee that these operations work flawlessly with protected data.
In addition, the new firmware allows users to perform Full or Quick Formatting operations to the device's HDD.
Last, the resolution of the outputted video can be manually set, according to the TV set that has been connected to the PS3. When connected through HDMI, the PS3 will decide to output video at a resolution of 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p or standard (NTSC).
