Gigastorage and Princo infringed Philips patents

According to Digitimes, US Court has upheld a patent infringement charge made by Philips against Taiwan optical disc makers Gigastorage and Princo concerning six Philips CD-R patents.

A hearing will now be scheduled to determine damages, according to Philips Taiwan.

Philips filed the complaint in early 2002, with the court delivering a summary judgment in favor of Philips in March 2005, which granted an injunction forbidding further sales of CD-R/RW discs produced by the two makers in the US market.

Gigastorage and Princo had used Philips technology and patents to make CD-R and CD-RW discs without paying royalties, resulting in lower production cost for the two manufacturers and causing unfair competition again Philips' licensees, Philips Taiwan emphasized.
