BenQ Mobile to close plants

After continuing market share erosion, BenQ is determined to close several manufacturing facilities.

A report from Manager Magazin even claims that the company plans to sell its entire mobile phone production.

According to the report, the Taiwanese company is in negotiations with Foxconn Electronics Inc, also based in Taiwan, as well as with the US company Jabil Circuit. At issue are BenQ's manufacturing facilities in Europe, North America and Asia.

BenQ bought the mobile handset business from Siemens about a year ago - at a purely symbolic price and with an additional give-away of ?250 million ($320 million). Nevertheless, even under BenQ management, the handset sales continued to decline. Therefore BenQ mobile CEO Clemens Joos has to report increasing losses to the mother company, the manager magazine report says.
