AMD Opteron Processor Marks ITs Third Anniversary with More Server Market Share Gains

Momentum Continues for AMD Opteron Processor with 12 Newly Validated Servers for Channel and Release of HyperTransport(TM) 3.0 Specs

Coinciding with the third anniversary of the launch of the AMD Opteron(TM) processor and AMD64 technology launch, AMD (NYSE: AMD) announced today it has seen an increase in its overall x86 server processor market share. Based on the 2006 first quarter numbers from Mercury Research, the AMD Opteron processor now accounts for 22.1 percent of the worldwide x86 server processors shipped in the first quarter, up from 16.4 percent in the 2005 fourth quarter. These new numbers, combined with today's introduction of 12 new platforms that meet the AMD Validated Server guidelines, demonstrate strong demand and momentum for AMD Opteron processor-based solutions across various commercial customer segments.

The AMD Opteron processor-based validated servers offered by Newisys, Supermicro Computer, Inc., Tyan Computer Corporation and Uniwide Technologies, Inc. were unveiled this week at the AMD Worldwide Distributors Conference in Dubai, and several will be on display today in AMD's booth at Gartner IT ChannelVision Europe in Monte Carlo. AMD Validated Server platforms are thoroughly tested for quality, compatibility, longevity and stability and are backed by global manufacturers who have met rigorous standards of performance and service in order to participate. The new platforms are being sold in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America.

"As the number of available AMD Opteron processor-based servers from our OEM and system builder community continues to rise, so does our share of the x86 server from both a market and revenue perspective," said Henri Richard, executive vice president and chief sales and marketing officer, AMD. "AMD remains committed to working collaboratively with leading manufacturers to develop qualified, reliable and well-supported server solutions with industry-leading x86 performance-per-watt-per-dollar for the channel."

According to a recently released report from Mercury Research, AMD's first-quarter market share growth reflected substantial gains in the x86 server market and now represents 22.1 percent, a 26-percent increase over AMD's share in the fourth quarter of 2005 and a 254-percent increase over the first quarter of 2005.

"As confirmed by Mercury Research, this growth speaks volumes to the industry's rapid adoption of AMD Opteron processors with Direct Connect Architecture and HyperTransport(TM) technology, leaving little doubt that AMD is gaining presence as a strong player with staying power," said Marty Seyer, senior vice president, Commercial Segment, AMD. "The superior performance-per-watt architecture of the AMD Opteron processor provides a compelling value proposition to the channel to meet the rigorous performance, power and cooling requirements of datacenters worldwide."

HyperTransport(TM) 3.0 Specification Now Available

Further demonstrating AMD's industry leadership in developing and promoting next-generation computing technologies according to customer needs, the HyperTransport Consortium announced Monday the availability of the HyperTransport 3.0 specification. Future AMD64 processors are planned to be able to take advantage of the increased bandwidth and other features offered by HyperTransport 3.0, which is designed to provide even faster processor-to-processor and processor-to-I/O throughput in multiprocessor server and multi-system environments. AMD is a founding member of the HyperTransport(TM) Technology Consortium, a standards organization dedicated to developing the industry's lowest latency, highest bandwidth interconnect technology. The consortium currently has more than 40 industry-leading member companies.
