Samsung to Launch 71-inch Rear-Projection TV

Samsung Electronics said Tuesday it will begin selling a 71-inch rear-projection television, which it claims is the world's biggest.

The company said it would debut the 71-inch model in South Korea with an expected selling price of 7.5 million won (US$7,358) on Friday.

Rear-projection TV, which displays an image on a front plastic screen by beaming the image from a device at the back, is one of three fast-growing flat-panel TV technologies, along with liquid crystal displays and plasma display panels.

Rear-projection models are gaining popularity in North America.

Samsung plans to begin selling the 71-inch model SVP-71L8UH in the North American market early next month.

The new model is 51.8 centimeters thick, equivalent to the size of a 29-inch traditional cathode-ray tube television, Samsung said in a statement.

It weighs 50.3 kilograms, so the TV can be hung on a wall, according to the statement.
