Intel Introduces Pentium D Dual-core Chips

Intel unveiled its dual-core Pentium D processor-based platform for entry-level servers and the corresponding Intel E7230 chipset.

The architecture, which will be targeted at low-end small business servers, will benefit from "highly competitive pricing", according to the chip giant.

Intel claimed that the platform supports enterprise-class features such as PCI Express I/O, 64-bit addressability, DDR2 memory and software Raid.

The Pentium D is the first of what Intel promises will be an extensive family of Intel-based dual-core server products shipping later this year and in 2006.

Pricing for the Pentium D processors for direct Intel customers in 1000-unit tray quantities starts at $241 for the 820 model running at 2.8GHz with 2x1M L2 cache and an 800MHz FSB. The Intel E7230 chipset starts at $36 each based on quantities of 1,000.
