Mobo shipments to drop in 2Q

Asustek Computer, Elitegroup Computers (ECS) and Gigabyte Technology expect their second quarter's motherboard shipments to fall 5-15% on quarter, according to the companies.

Asustek has forecast shipments of 10.25 million motherboards for the second quarter, representing a 15% sequential drop from the 12 million motherboards it shipped in the first quarter. In the second quarter of 2004, Asustek had a drop-off of 17% in shipments from the previous quarter.

However, Asustek expects its second quarter notebook shipments to increase from the 700,000-800,000 notebooks it shipped in the first quarter.

ECS anticipates a seasonal drop in its second quarter motherboard shipments of less than 10%. Last year, the company's second quarter shipments fell 9%. ECS also expects its notebook shipments to remain flat from the 130,000 units it shipped in the first quarter

Gigabyte projects a 5-10% decrease in its motherboard shipments in the second quarter, though it expects to ship 800,000 graphics cards in the second quarter, the same amount it shipped in the first quarter.
