T-Mobile unveils wireless 'mini-laptop'

T-Mobile has unveiled the MDA IV, a 'mini-laptop' handheld which runs the Windows Mobile operating system and includes integrated wireless Lan, GPRS and UMTS technology.

Due to be available this summer, the device is equipped with a high-resolution VGA screen and can be swivelled to turn the mini-laptop into a PDA with a touchscreen.

Features on the 100 sq cm unit include two integrated cameras, loudspeakers, Bluetooth, a full keyboard, a 520MHz Intel processor and Office functionality.

The USB and Bluetooth interfaces allow for synchronisation with a PC, and the built-in cameras allow users to take photos and record video sequences.

Martin Knauer, managing director of marketing at T-Mobile Germany, said: "Operated on our multimedia networks, the mini-laptop is almost as powerful as a desktop PC. This is a response to the requirements of our customers who want the tools of their trade to be just as reliable on the move as in the office."

T-Mobile also announced plans to increase its global wireless hotspots from 11,000 to 20,000 by the end of 2005.
