TEAC Now Shipping Truly Portable DVD-ROM Drive New Line of Battery-Operated Drives to Include Two CD-RW Models Later This Month

TEAC, a world leader in the manufacture of CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and CD-R/RW storage technology, today announces the immediate availability of a new Portable 8X DVD-ROM drive. This compact DVD-ROM drive is part of a new line of truly portable drives from TEAC that also will feature both a USB and a PCMCIA CD-RW drive to ship later this month.

TEAC's Portable 8X DVD-ROM drive delivers swift 8X performance for smoother video playback and runs even the most demanding CD-ROM titles and software installations at a 24X maximum speed. Enhancing any notebook, the new portable drive provides full video capabilities for both business use and entertainment.

The 8X Portable DVD-ROM drive is designed specifically for mobile applications. Weighing just over one pound, the drive is approximately the same size as most portable audio CD players. It connects to a notebook PC by a universal PCMCIA Type II connector that provides an easy plug-and-play connection and delivers a continuous stream of data.

For added portability, the TEAC DVD-ROM can be powered from an integrated rechargeable battery pack. In addition, the drive can draw power directly from the PCMCIA connection or from its AC adapter, while continuously recharging itself. A switch on the side of the drive allows the user to select the desired power source. The drive also comes with powerful, yet easy-to-use video player software that decodes multiple video and audio formats and lets the user control the way he/she prefers to watch movies.

A fast 8X data transfer rate coupled with an average access time of 110ms (90ms for CD-ROM) and a 512KB data buffer, make the new DVD-ROM an extremely efficient and reliable device for watching movies on the plane or listening to audio CDs, all with this new lightweight drive. It supports all major read-only formats, including DVD-ROM, DVD Video, CD-ROM, CD DA and Video CD.

``TEAC is driven to provide the most reliable, easy-to-use portable storage solutions for the mobile user,'' stated Les Luzar, division manager, TEAC America's Data Storage Products Division. ``We're excited that with our new portable 8X DVD-ROM, consumers can now play their favorite movies and music in one ultra-small, lightweight unit.''

Based on TEAC's internal DV-28E, a slim 8X DVD-ROM drive designed to be installed inside notebook systems, the external 8X DVD-ROM is available as a complete kit that supports Windows 98/Me and Windows 2000 Professional at an MSRP of $299.00. Like all of TEAC's Data Storage Products, the 8X DVD-ROM (model #DVE-28PE) can be found at participating retailers throughout the country and is available to resellers and VARs through the company's network of authorized distributors.
