Plasmon Announces That IBM i5/OS Natively Supports UDO

Plasmon (LSE: PLM), the market leader for professional data archival solutions, today announced that IBM i5/OS provides native support for 30GB UDO technology in Plasmon G-Series for IBM OS/400 optical libraries.

With UDO library storage capacities ranging from 720GB to over 19TB, this increases capacities by more than six-fold compared to previous generation 5.2GB IBM Magneto Optical (MO) libraries. The Plasmon G-Series for IBM OS/400 libraries "powered by UDO" are supported by iSeries V5R3 via PTF software upgrades.

"IBM is pleased to team with Plasmon to bring our eServer iSeries customers greatly increased archival storage capacities. As our iSeries users' archiving needs continue to grow, UDO provides very compelling advantages such as true WORM data unalterability, rapid file access and low Total Cost of Ownership," said John Reed, Director of iSeries Product Management, IBM.

UDO, which features blue laser recording rather than the red lasers used in previous optical drives such as MO and DVD, achieves far greater data densities, resulting in dramatically higher media capacities. UDO will be introduced at 60GB and 120GB media capacities over the next four years. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is about one-fifth the cost of previous generation MO, much lower than competitive hard drive-based solutions and very attractive when compared to tape offerings.

"There are thousands of IBM iSeries customers already using optical storage for business critical applications. The addition of UDO support provides these existing and new users with a very clear and cost-effective roadmap for the future," said Christopher Harris, President of Plasmon. "This level of commitment from both IBM and Plasmon is extremely important to companies developing long-term archival storage strategies."

The Phase Change recording technology used by UDO is field-proven and highly stable. With true Write Once authenticity and a media life of 50+ years, UDO meets the most demanding requirements of regulatory agencies and other authorities for the secure, long-term storage of information.

In addition to eliminating the need for additional library management software, IBM's native iSeries operating system support for UDO provides flexible, scaleable and regulatory compliant optical storage for applications such as document and record management. G-Series for IBM OS/400 libraries support simultaneous use of 9.1GB MO and 30GB UDO in the same library. The libraries contain a broad range of fully populated capacities ranging from 218GB to over 19TB.
