Message Text: Verbatim Corporation announced today that its DataLifePlus 4.7GB DVD-R General Use media and DVD-RW media are optimized for the latest higher-performance DVD-R/DVD-RW drives. With 2x certification, the Verbatim write-once DVD-R General media allows users to write a complete 4.7GB disc in about 30 minutes.

When Verbatim re-recordable DVD-RW discs are selected, users can take advantage of the new "quick format" function available with Pioneer's recently announced DVR-A04 drive. The quick format feature eliminates the need for full formatting of the media prior to writing in the packet writing mode.

Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD-R and DVD-RW media can be used with Pioneer(r) DVD-R/RW drives, and the DVD/CD drives offered with Apple(r), Compaq(r) and Sony(r) computers, as well as the new DVD-Multi drives that are being rolled out by Hitachi Panasonic and others. Verbatim will feature DataLifePlus 4.7GB DVD-R and DVD-RW media during DV Expo this week at Booth #258 in New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

Focused on meeting the need for higher-speed recording, Verbatim also announced that it plans to roll out 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW media in September.

"Consumers need to be aware that in order to take advantage of the higher-speed DVD-R recording speeds available with the new, higher-performance DVD-R/RW drives, they must have 2x-certified DVD-R General media," said Tim Clatterbuck, Verbatim Director of Optical Storage Marketing. "Unlike high speed CD-R recording, 2X DVD-R recording requires optimization. The recorder checks the manufacturer information encoded on each disc against a list of qualified companies contained in its firmware," he explained. "Verbatim is one of the few media manufacturers that has earned this certification and Pioneer's recommendation."

Fully compliant with the DVD-R General and DVD-RW specifications established by the DVD Forum, the Verbatim discs provide broad backward read compatibility with the vast majority of DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players in use today.

To ensure exceptional reliability and durability, DataLifePlus media incorporates revolutionary recording layer technologies that were developed by Verbatim and its parent company, Mitsubishi(r) Chemical Corporation (MCC).

Verbatim DVD-RW Media

Verbatim's 4.7GB DVD-RW discs are produced with a Super-Eutectic phase-change recording layer. The Super-Eutectic recording layer enhances the media's read/write performance and longevity, ensuring that repeated recording and playback will not cause any deterioration in picture or sound quality. Verbatim DVD-RW discs have a data life of more than 50 years and information can be accessed millions of times without read/write deterioration. When the data stored on the disc is no longer useful or needs to be updated, users can overwrite the disc up to 1,000 times.

The re-recordable DVD-RW media allows users to edit and incrementally update data on the discs. By incorporating advanced CLV (constant linear velocity) recording techniques, data can be quickly streamed to the media and immediately played back for use in corporate video training, information kiosks, education, video-enabled multimedia presentations, service and support.

Verbatim DVD-R for General Use Media

Verbatim 2x-certified DVD-R media utilizes MCC's patented Metal Azo dye for the recording layer. Metal Azo is an exceptionally strong material that provides the highest level of recording stability and archival life. Metal Azo technology also maintains the best recording compatibility with the lower laser wavelengths and higher laser powers needed to write DVD media at high speeds.

Users can record to Verbatim DVD-R discs using the incremental or disc-at-once methods. With support for incremental writing, users can add files directly to a DVD-R disc one recording at a time, instead of requiring that all files be accumulated on a hard disk prior to writing as with the disc-at-once method.

The media's write-once format and 100-year data life make it ideal for organizations that store and archive critical information such as financial data, legal files, government records and medical images that must not be altered or overwritten.

With its high capacity and broad compatibility, Verbatim DVD-R media is also ideal for consumers that want to share their videos with family members as well as businesses that want an easy, cost-effective solution for limited distribution of training and marketing videos or multimedia presentations.

Verbatim DVD-R media are available in both branded and blank printable surface configurations. Tested to ensure compatibility with the latest inkjet and thermal disc printers, the blank surface media can be customized to provide professional-looking discs for limited production runs. For volume prototyping and other applications that use a large number of discs, Verbatim also provides DVD-R media on 20- and 50-pc spindles.

Available from authorized resellers and the Verbatim Web site, the street price for DataLifePlus DVD-RW media is $8.00 for single-sided 4.7GB discs.
