Message Text: SANYO has now developed, for the first time in the industry, chipsets for both combo (CD-R/RW and DVD) drives and CD-R/RW drives that support the ML recording technology. These chipsets consist of the LC898050 ML record/playback processing IC and either the LC898040 CD-R/RW drive signal-processing IC or the LC898010 combo drive signal-processing IC.

The CD-R/RW drive is rapidly becoming popular for data storage for personal computers. Although DVD drives that can store large amounts of data are available, the high cost of both the media and the drives themselves has limited their popularity for ordinary users.

The Multilevel (ML) recording technology developed by Calimetrics, Inc. (USA) is a record and playback technology that allows the capacity of current CD-ROM media to be increased by almost a factor of three to 2 GB by using multi-value recording. Since ML technology uses the optical and mechanical systems of current CD-R/RW drives without modification, it offers a low-cost high-capacity storage solution.

The LC898050 supports a record/playback speed (disc rotational speed) equivalent to 12´ speed in a CD-ROM drive, and a data rate of 5.4 MB/s, which is equivalent to a 36´-speed CD-ROM drive. Since the disc speed is much lower relative to the data rate, lower cost components can be used in the disc drive system. Like the earlier SANYO CD-R/RW drive signal-processing ICs, the LC898040 and LC898010 include a wide range of functions, including SANYO’s BURN-Proof function, which prevents errors during recording, a write strategy function that improves recording quality by providing optimal control, and an ATAPI interface. In addition, the LC898010 also provides all functions required in a combo drive.

ML recording CD-R/RW drives can be implemented by combing the LC898040 and LC898050. Similarly, ML recording combo drives can be implemented by combing the LC898010 and LC898050.

The use of these newly-developed chipsets allows the implementation of CR-R/RW and combo drives that support 2 GB ML recording in addition to earlier functions, simplifies drive design, and can shorten the development period.
