Toshiba announced today, the next generation super large capacity rewriting type optical disk (12cm) of 30GB capacity using blue laser. With the new media, up to 3 hours of high quality digital can be recorded...
The 30GB capacity of the 12cm media was achieved at a single layer 12cm media. The use of the blue laser (wave length 405nm) and the thickness of record layer (0.1mm) made the increased capacity reality. In addition, PRML technology adopted for the land & the groove format and regenerative signal processing. The discs can be used for AV use (mainly) but also for file format - under UDF (Universal Disk Format).
Toshiba's new proposal will be proposed to the DVD forum as the next official DVD recording format. Last the new recording media will be displayed at 2002 International CES show.
