Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is about to release its first tablet, according to an unconfirmed report.

The announcement is expected to be made at a launch event in Beijing on May 15, according to Reuters' sources.

Japanese Sharp is expected to provide the 7.9-inch display for the new device, which will join

Xiaomi's lineup of smartphones -- the highly succesful Mi 3, a a 5.5 inch-screen "phablet" and the low-cost Redmi handset.

Xiaomi is trying to expand to the high-end Chinese smartphone market to compete against the local rivals Huawei Technologies C and Lenovo Group.
